Known for: Cheap & basic Mexican street food
El Loco is a local cafe/restaurant/bar serving authentic Mexican food and drink, nestled in the the alternative Surry Hills district of Sydney.
All food on the menu is very cheap – you’re looking at just $5 for a taco and $7 for quesadillas – however the portions are very small, so you may want to treat it like tapas and grab two or three items.
The quality of the food is very good, despite the low prices, with great spicy and smokey flavors. I had the Al Pastor Taco (spit roasted pork & pineapple salsa) and the Chorizo Quesadilla (severed with jalapenos, guacamole & chilli mayonnaise), both a great snack for a quick lunchtime bite.
They also have a “Secret Taco” on the menu, so if you’re feeling adventurous and want a surprise, try your luck with this.
If this wasn’t secretive enough, they have and even more secret item which isn’t even listed on the menu; sign-up to be a member, and not only do you get a free keyring, but you get exclusive access to be able to order the “Super Secret Burger”. I’ve not dared order this yet. Maybe next time.
While the food is good here however, if you’re looking for a more substantial and/or formal meal, I probably wouldn’t recommend it.
El Loco remains open into the small hours of the morning every day and so they also have a good Mexican drinks menu. As well as the wine and Mexican beers, they also have plenty of cocktails to choose from, obviously based around tequila and the Margarita!
Basic. Small. Flavorful.
Fast. With a smile.
