The Land of No OZone Layer

Share me:

Not only does it get crazy hot in Australia (they even had to introduce a new colour into their weather maps last year as they didn’t have one to show temperatures over 45°C) but the ozone layer here is almost non-existent.

This means that the UV levels get dangerously high and you really need to put on sun lotion whenever going outdoors to protect yourself. You almost get into the habit of wearing it as you would do with deodorant!

Due to the lack of ozone layer and the long periods of sunshine throughout the year, Australia has the highest level of skin cancer in the world. Australians are four times more likely to develop skin cancer than any other form of cancer and approximately 66% of the population will be diagnosed with a form of skin cancer before their 70th birthday.

Scary, huh?

Nat with the poms Nivea bundle

Our cool poms bundle from Nivea

Nivea kindly sent me a poms sun protection starter pack recently, so we decided to take it with us yesterday when we went to Watson’s Bay.

We had a bottle of Ultra Beach Protect SPF 30+ sunscreen spray and a bottle of Light Feel SPF 30 Daily Face Veil lotion. They even sent us a cool little Nivea beach tent to escape from the sun if there was no shade!

The Ultra Beach spray was great as I always find spray bottles better to use that sloppy lotion bottles. It is also water resistant for up to 4 hours which makes it great for a day at the beach.

The Daily Face Veil is a product I’ve not seen before. It’s a much lighter, less oily and non-sticky sunscreen which is designed specifically for use on your face. While it’s not waterproof, it is a great everyday lotion that the girls can even wear along with their make-up.

So remember guys and girls – ALWAYS wear sun lotion when in Australia!
